Glamping in Dalarna, next to Lake Siljan

Try glamping in Dalarna this summer! Are you drawn to spending time close to nature, but less keen on lugging around a tent and sleeping bag, struggling with flapping tent fabric and fumbling with tent poles, digging around, cramming together, and sleeping on a hard surface? The concept is called glamping. Enjoy the benefits and skip the hassle of traditional camping—stay comfortably at a glamping site.

What is glamping?

Glamping is a portmanteau of the words “glamorous” and “camping.” It’s simply a form of camping with a touch of luxury, where you don’t have to set up your own camp. You get the outdoor experience of sleeping in a tent without sacrificing comfort and with access to amenities. For some, glamping is also about pulling off the feat of camping in style.

Today, there are an increasing number of glamping sites that offer a more comfortable experience with a multi-star standard. Like camping, glamping can be done in many different ways. Options around the world include teepees, yurts (nomadic tents), prairie wagons, stylish trailers, safari tents, and minimalist-style domes. Accommodations can vary greatly, but a glamping tent typically includes standing room and a proper mattress.

The accommodation is warm and cozy, the beds are comfortable, and you’re still out in the open air. You and your companions can enjoy a good night’s sleep close to nature. You have access to electricity and Wi-Fi and can brew a cup of coffee or pour a glass of wine. Rest, enjoyment, and relaxation are the focus. The luxury is a kind of “barefoot luxury”—being close to and experiencing nature in a comfortable way, with a cozy atmosphere and that little extra touch.

The modern glamping concept is common in other parts of Europe; it is particularly popular among the British, Germans, French, and Dutch, but is spreading worldwide. Although glamping is not yet widespread in Sweden, it is a growing trend here as well.

But glamping isn’t really a new phenomenon, as evidenced by the royal escapades of the 16th century, among other things. James V brought furniture and other amenities from the castle to the tent he had pitched in the Scottish Highlands. And in Henry VIII’s tent camp, established in France in 1520, all 2,800 tents were glamorously furnished. The camp came to be known as the Gold Brocade Camp. During the 1920s, it was fashionable among wealthy Britons to bring luxurious amenities with them when they went on safari trips.

Glamping or not

"Glampacker" is a term used to describe a type of traveler who, unlike the backpacker, is keen to travel without sacrificing either comfort or style. These are connoisseurs and bon vivants, and glamping—which offers a close connection to nature, amenities, and entertainment—is naturally right up the glampacker’s alley.

The desire to explore the world is something glampers share with backpackers. And whether you’re one or the other—or perhaps a bit of both—the point is to travel, experience new things, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Of course, glamping isn’t just for glampers.

Have fun with the whole family

Take the chance to try something new together and go glamping with the whole family this summer. This luxurious experience isn’t just perfect for a romantic weekend getaway, but also for spending exciting quality time with the family.

The kind of effort and hassle associated with traditional camping can put a damper on the mood for both adults and children. A more comfortable option can make things easier for families with children, helping everyone stay in good spirits and find relaxation in their shared adventure.

For grandparents, this could mean an opportunity to go camping with their grandchildren—something that might not otherwise be so easy if their backs tend to get stiff and their joints are prone to acting up.
